The Roxy on Sunset – Concert Photography

Nov 13, 2009

Hey everyone! So last Saturday on Nov. 8th I got to take photos of my friend’s band, Saint Motel – I went to college with these guys, and they’re a blast to watch on stage! They’re great fun to watch, and awesome performers.  I’ve been to a lot of shows at the Roxy, and this one was one of the best ones yet.

Black and White Show at the Roxy featuring Saint Motel presented by KROQ

One of my awesome best friends, Lauren Kaufman (PS If you’re in LA, check out For the Love of Dog – she’s an excellent dog walker/dog sitter).  She works as the merch girl for Saint Motel – funny enough I met her via other people at Chapman.

AJ Jackson – lovely and talented singer, one of the nicest people you’ll ever meet.  Check out the rest of the pics in the gallery – that’s right, Cherry Fizz takes Event Photography!  You can see some of my events from other concerts, and links to my other events I’ve lent my creative eye to.

Why Cherry Fizz is Full of Photoshop (and not ashamed to admit it!)

Oct 25, 2009

Man oh MAN – is this a hard subject for me to tackle.  Does anyone else argue about things with themselves?

This is a big internal argument for me, although the “photoshop is fun yay” part usually wins. The feminist side of me that says women of all shapes and sizes are beautiful – the one that says “anything photo shopped in magazines distorts women to think that they can be this way.”  Yes, photoshop can be abused, has anyone seen these ridiculous Ralph Lauren ads?  Obviously, this is WAY too thin, to a point of obviousness with photoshop.  But then again, how much can we give people the benefit of the doubt?  Do people realize that images of this are altered, or do they believe that all girls look like this in Cali-for-ni-ayyyyy….

Katie from Medusa Salon, before and after
Katie from Medusa Salon, before and after

I will never try to pass off my images as something that they aren’t – while I do love taking pictures of girls in all shapes and sizes, I am also a girl who wanted to draw, and instead picked up a camera.  Most of my images are works that, if I had the option to draw them, I probably would. However, where I lack skills in hand drawing girls like this, I pick up a camera and collaborate with models, make up artists, fashion designers (or just costume collectors), and then take the raw data I get, and shape it to fill in curves that aren’t in the picture, because I just love curvy fun lines.  Sometimes if a girl is a bit bigger I will help slender her down to the size that I have seen her at before, something still natural to her body.  Not something unrealistic.

I will also do what us feminists will call objectifying, I just say fun for boys and girls alike – is smoothing out and slightly enhancing breasts, and other lumps and bumps.  Shocker, I know. Humans of all ages and sizes alike enjoy breasts of, well, all shapes and sizes. Few people I know dislike breasts.

However, I still feel the need to explain myself.   I will never, take an A cup and turn it into a triple D cup, not only is that, for my photoshop skills currently, pretty hard, I just don’t feel right doing it. Taking a girl up a size, nip tucking via photoshop here and there to help make her into a pin up model worthy of rockabilly magazines, fits into my idea that my photos are more akin to drawings I’d create, if I could draw.  I just instead photoshop. To be fair, if a woman had breasts that were too big, and I feel the photo would fit better if they were slightly shrunken, I would do the same, it depends on how I want the final image to look.

My dear friend Dave Beukers was looking at the new Vixen Kabarett poster and commented on how amazing all the girls looked, I let him know that, while my girls are very lovely, the cartoony curves were in fact, a side effect of photoshop, and not just un-naturally curvy bodies.  Sorcery! He proclaimed, Sorcery! And that is the best way to describe what I do with people when I give them glammed up photoshopped make overs.

The Vixen Kabarett - Before and After
The Vixen Kabarett – Before and After (please wait for the animation, takes at least 10 seconds to see the changes)

The above image is just one part of many.  My fiance Eric is a talented artist and can do much more of the drawing thing than I can, so we are currently working together on a new poster for The Vixen Kabarett. Thanks to my former advertising professor Cory O’Connor (who, as you may or may not know, is here to #boycottnick – click the link to find out more…), our little Kabarett (The Vixen Kabarett to you ladies and gents) is performing at the 4th Annual Warlocks and Witches Ball.  Be there at Marion Knotts Studios, Chapman University, Orange, California; the doors open at 8pm, be there with your best Halloween get up and get ready to party!

This is Eric and I’s first collaboration that will actually get to see the light of day. Eric drew the background and I edited the girls and helped smooth out some of the finer details, plus we talked about ideas we had for the image to make it better.

Partway through the girl on the far left dropped, hence why is she is replaced in the later image, however, I’m not sure how I can fix the dancer’s arms in terms of how they were lit. Alas, I will figure out something with my trust Wacom tablet and photoshop at my side.  Back to the main point of this rambling.

I honestly think that in high school, I was able to deal with my weight, and the beauty industry “standards” better because I started playing with photoshop late into my freshman year of YVHS.  Throughout the years I improved my photo and airbrushing skills, but the power of beauty in magazines has never made me feel as if I couldn’t look like these woman, it gave me a different vision.  I could start to see where they were airbrushed, it encouraged me to look up before and after pictures of these professional photos.  I learned that even the most beautiful person in real life still got a whole lot of photoshop editing before the picture went to press (Angelina Jolie? Kate Winslet?).  Maybe other girls in high school and college should be taking and embracing photoshop classes instead of the option of ignorance (and thinking that the models are real) or complete blame for the program itself, and learn how to create art, maybe of themselves, maybe of their friends, and explore the artistic merits of photoshop, even go into other arts.

It’s been more than 8 years since I’ve started playing around in photoshop, and my self esteem couldn’t be higher.  I can forgive photoshopped women in magazines, because I don’t have to say “I can never look like that” – I instead say “well, they never looked like that either!”

Huntington Beach Girls Love Cherry Fizz!

Sep 25, 2009

Set 3 in the series of photos from Medusa Salon, another four pictures for you to enjoy!

Melanie from Medusa in HB

Medusa Salon, for all you OC people, is located in Huntington Beach and the ladies that work there are FANTASTIC.  They have hair, make up, nail, and waxing services.

Huntington Beach Pin Up

The actual salon is full of fun and a relaxed atmosphere, hip music in the background and bright walls and styling everywhere – this photo was shot on location!

All the girls who work at Medusa are exceptionally creative and most had a hand in coming up with ideas for their photos, all of them delivered as models.

Scissor Sister from Medusa Salon in HB

Of course, it just wouldn’t be a Cherry Fizz photo unless it had lots of eye popping colors (or, in other cases, a retro aesthetic.)

Huntington Beach Photos – Hair by Medusa Salon

Sep 22, 2009

Like I promised, some more sexilicious photos – hair and makeup done by Medusa Salon. I think I might set up some photo shoots through their salon available to the general public, a hair/makeup/photo shoot special.

Mychel at Medusa Salon in Huntington Beach - Photo by Cherry Fizz

The best part about this was how guerrilla it was – I have two tiny little lights I use, and of course the surrounding area of the salon. But I managed to get SO many looks. I’m only about 1/2 through editing all of the photos.

Medusa Salon Potrait by Cherry Fizz Photos

So I showed up, used what I had available to me, and took some pictures, trying to create something fun for each person unique to their personality.

I don’t hide that I use photoshop.  I’ve been using photoshop for longer than I’ve been a photographer, and have taught myself what I know – but for me, these photos aren’t a portrayal of reality – that’s part of the fun!  Reality has it’s place, but it’s so boring. ;)

I prefer something out of the extraordinary – out of the box, bright with colors (well, for the most part) – something that makes you realize how sparkly you are. Yes sparkly. Like those darned Twilight vampires. Which reminds me, vamp season IS upon us, and I do have a little thing for True Blood, mmmmm. Maybe I need to take some sexy photos, yes? ;)

Monroe Inspired Pin Up from Orange County

Sep 21, 2009
Southern California Pin Up by Cherry Fizz Photos

This was taken a while ago with a few friends just for fun, I just had photoshop block until last night. This was taken in my Orange County home studio, AKA my apartment dining room and portable studio equipment. I am going a different direction with my photoshop – I want to make it look like they’re worn photos from an old magazine, something that a guy in the army would stick up in his barracks to remember his woman back home. (Which, funny enough, is the story behind this – Ashley Stephens, the model, was an army wife, she gave the proofs to her hubby.)

Notice the wonderful make up and hair – my friend Jennifer Fredrickson is a fantastic artist and, using her mad skills, did a mini-makeover to turn a lovely model into sexy pin up vivacious and stunning!

Coming up are some new Medusa Salon photos… the next in the Medusa series. :) Oh, and if you’re hankering for more photos, check out my other classic pin ups.

Pin Up and Portrait Video

Aug 15, 2009

Hey everyone!  As you know, I’m a big fan of Animoto video creation services.  Anyways at the request of my favorite Chapman professor, Cory O’Connor, I made a new video (one not featuring lines about which a teacher being a fool – which, I don’t personally think teachers are fools, I just liked the beats in the song.)

Anyways, here’s my new video, featuring a lot more of my pin ups! :)

Cherry Fizz Recipes

Jul 31, 2009
etc

So since I like to google myself (oh yeah baby!), I also like to Google my endevors and see where I’m at.   So a Google search of “Cherry Fizz” presents, in first place, a scarf.  Okay, at least Cherry-Fizz.com is in second place, and my entrance photo is also the first photo.  More good news.

In third place, is the recipe for Cherry Fizz!  I mean, to me a Cherry Fizz was a Cherry 7-up, or similarly a Shirly Temple.  According to this, it’s an alcoholic Cherry Fizz.

According to DrinksMixer.com

2 oz cherry brandy
juice of 1/2 lemons
carbonated water
1 cherry
Shake juice of lemon and cherry brandy with ice and strain into a highball glass over two ice cubes. Fill with carbonated water and stir. Top with the cherry and serve.
That’s it!
For an equally tasty, but non alcoholic drink (for you under 21 out there), you can always try my recipe of equal parts Simply Limeaid and Cherry 7up, delicious on a hot summer day. (I know, total gyp, no picture!  Ha.  Well, enjoy my drinks anyways. :D )
*Note now at a later date, it’s down to 7th, lets see if we can get it up to number 1!

Tiffany Rose Photos website is up!

Jul 30, 2009

Oh my, after a lot of elbow grease, I’ve got Tiffany Rose Photos up and running!

A little sampling of the photos over there. Cherry Fizz is the magical land I have created of bright lights and colors, I love to spend hours in Photoshop creating something that is like a painting or a cartoon. Tiffany Rose Photos is my demure side, my “family friendly” side – I mean, as family friendly as you can get. I still love to take crazy zany pictures of regular families and wicked awesome punk rock families and anything in between, but somehow the photos I take don’t seem to fit into the Cherry Fizz site. So go check it out already!
